2007/2008

Postgraduate course and workshop for supervisors on the theme:

Justification of findings in mathematics and science education research,
with particular regard to the role of theory in such justification

Time: November 22, 11.00 to November 24, 13.30

Place: Hotel Storebælt in Nyborg, Denmark (www.hotel-storebaelt.dk).

Structure: The format is one of a joint course / workshop for postgraduate students and supervisors in the Nordic and Baltic countries. For a postgraduate student who submit an essay after the course (subject to certain requirements specified in the final programme) which is accepted by the organisers, the workshop will be count as a course of 2.5 ECTS points.

Content and organisation: The focus will be on a detailed analysis of the research findings stated in a number of selected papers in mathematics and science education research, with particular regard to the specific foundation and justification of the findings, including (the nature of) the evidence provided, the methodology adopted and the theoretical constructs invoked in obtaining the findings. Participants will engage in such analyses in small groups based on briefs given by the organisers. They will have read the papers selected before coming to the workshop / course.

Particular emphasis will be placed on comparing the nature and justification of findings within different kinds of research.

In addition to the groups work lectures on the theme will be given by leading researchers in the relevant fields.

Organisation and Funding: The course / workshop is organised in cooperation between NADIFO, The Danish Graduate School in Mathematics and Science Education, and NoGSME, The Nordic Graduate School in Mathematics Education. The attendance of postgraduate students and supervisors will be supported by NADIFO / NoGSME according to their respective rules and policies.

Peripheral Visions on Work and Learning

Doctoral courses in the Nordic countries during 2007/2008

We hope that doctoral students have started to plan for the courses
they will take during the next academic year. Added to the local
courses there is a choice of course through the Nordic Graduate
School. As in earlier years Agder University College will offer Theory of
Science from a mathematics didactics perspective, Theories of teaching and learning mathematics in the autumn and in the spring probably either
Problem solving, Meta perspectives in mathematics and mathematics learning in a technological environment, or Methodology in mathematic education.
The later course has 16 participants at the moment of writing, which is
the most ever. We are also preparing a course on Research on assessment in mathematics education, which will be given by Umeå University in
collaboration with NoGSME. In the autumn we hope to offer in Denmark as
alternatives a doctoral course and workshop on the theme Justification of
findings in mathematics and science education research, with particular
regard to the role of theory in such justification. It can be used as a
course by doctoral students and as a workshop by the supervisors. Planned
dates are 21-23 of November, 2007. If you are interested in taking part of
any of these courses we would like to know that as soon as possible. Most
of the courses are given as distance courses will physical meetings at a
few occasions during the semester. The courses will of course be given
only if there are enough students interested in taking part. As usual
doctoral students in NoGSME can get travel support to go to courses
outside their own university.
